Vanderbilt University scholar Michael Eric Dyson is set to deliver a speech on contemporary issues and developments in African American studies at Rice University April 1. Dyson’s address, “BHM, BLM, DEI, CRT, AI, AP and MLK: Alphabets Against American Amnesia,” will challenge and inspire audiences to confront uncomfortable truths, while working toward a more just and equitable society, according to event organizers.
Dyson is a Distinguished Professor of African American and Diaspora Studies, Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Society, and the Centennial Chair in African American and Diaspora Studies at Vanderbilt. His multifaceted career as an author, ordained minister and radio host adds depth to his perspectives on race, history and contemporary issues. With a bibliography of more than 25 books covering a diverse range of subjects, including influential figures such as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Marvin Gaye, Barack Obama and Tupac Shakur, Dyson’s scholarship underscores his commitment to exploring the complexities of African American culture and identity, organizers said.
The event hosted by Rice’s Center for African and African American Studies is co-sponsored by the Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning and the School of Humanities.
