Rice University’s Board of Trustees recently recognized Joseph R. Novak, faculty lecturer in the biosciences department and director of the Betty and Jacob Friedman Holistic Garden, for his contributions to both the university and the community. He has been a faculty member since 2014.
“Joe touches the lives of many in the Rice community and beyond,” said George Phillips, professor and associate chair of biosciences and associate dean for research in the Wiess School of Natural Sciences. “The organic urban farm at the Holistic Garden sends essentially all of its produce to the Rice serveries for direct, healthy nourishment of the students. Further, Novak’s reach goes beyond Rice’s hedges to include instruction to beginning farmers, including veterans, recent immigrants and others wanting to participate in sustainable farming practices.”
Driven by a passionate desire to share his knowledge about sustainable farming practices, Novak works with Plant it Forward by allowing farming interns to work in the garden and benefit from his deep understanding of urban agriculture. He also hosts events that support the community including Earth Day celebrations, garden club events and weekly public volunteer hours.
In addition, he uses the garden as part of his instruction in LPAP 106: Gardening for Wellness, which examines the known longevity and good health of gardeners. He also teaches multiple sections of Bios204: Environmental Sustainability: The Design and Practice of Community Agriculture. During these classes, students receive hands-on experience through activities related to soil management, composting, planting, pest management, tending and harvesting many plant species.
“These activities take place all under Joe’s knowledgeable and heart-given words and actions,” Phillips said.
