Former ambassador to Russia John Sullivan to discuss US-Russia relations at Rice Baker Institute Sept. 23

Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan will speak at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy today about the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia and reflect on his memoir, “Midnight in Moscow.”

The event is free, open to the public and available on livestream. A recording of the event will be available afterward on the Baker Institute YouTube channel.

Sullivan will speak with David Satterfield, director of the Baker Institute, former U.S. ambassador to Lebanon and Turkey and U.S. special envoy for Middle East humanitarian issues, and examine the deterioration of U.S.-Russia relations and consider the measures necessary to confront the challenges posed by Moscow.

Sullivan is an American attorney and government official whose career spans four decades in the public and private sectors. He served five presidents in prominent diplomatic and legal positions, including as U.S. ambassador to the Russian Federation under Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Before his post in Moscow, he served for almost three years as the U.S. deputy secretary of state. He is currently a distinguished fellow at Georgetown University and Columbia University, a partner in Mayer Brown LLP and a member of the congressionally chartered, bipartisan Commission on Reform and Modernization of the Department of State.
