Carmen Irvin, executive assistant in Rice University’s Office of Access, Equity and Equal Opportunity, was celebrated for four decades of service at Rice at a celebration with colleagues and friends March 21.
Irvin began her career at Rice in Career Services and will retire from the university this month.
“Carmen has been the kind of person who you want to see every morning, because you know whatever the task is that you have someone to support you, someone to listen to your concerns, work out the difficulties or barriers that may pop up along the way just so your lane or whatever it is that you’re trying to do remains clear and free, so you can do your best work,” said Richard Baker, executive director for HR People, Equity & Development, University Title IX Coordinator and Irvin’s supervisor.
Baker also commended Irvin as “an incredible source of institutional memory.”
“You just can’t replace someone that has been through all of the transitions or iterations of Rice, including the Rice we have today,” he said. “She’s going to be greatly missed. But I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of Carmen. I hope that we stay in contact for as long as she wants!”
