In celebration of National Poetry Month, Rice University’s Cherry Reading Series will host an April 2 reading and conversation event featuring two award-winning poets: Ishion Hutchinson and Valzhyna Mort.
Mort, a distinguished poet and translator originally from Minsk, Belarus, will showcase her acclaimed works from collections such as “Factory of Tears” and “Music for the Dead and Resurrected.” Mort’s poetic prowess has earned her work widespread recognition, including one of her poetry books being named best of 2020 by the New York Times and NPR as well as winning prestigious awards such as the International Griffin Poetry Prize and the 2022 UNT Rilke Prize.
Hailing from Port Antonio, Jamaica, Hutchinson has captivated readers with his compelling poetry from “Far District,” “House of Lords and Commons” and “School of Instructions.” Hutchinson’s literary achievements, including the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry and a Guggenheim Fellowship, solidified his status as a leading voice in contemporary poetry.
Established in 1991, the Cherry Reading Series pays homage to Rice Institute alumnus Robert Foster Cherry and has been a cornerstone of literary engagement at Rice. Supported by generous endowments at Fondren Library and in collaboration with the Department of English, the series has continually brought esteemed writers to share their craft with the Rice community.
As Rice joins the nationwide celebration of National Poetry Month, this event underscores the university’s commitment to fostering a vibrant literary culture within Houston’s rich tapestry of literary talent and burgeoning poetry scene.
