Campus parking violators get second chance for relief

Parking citation donations

Parking ticket

Campus parking tickets are becoming a bit easier to manage ... at least for a couple days this month. On Nov. 19-20, anyone with unpaid parking citations issued on or before Nov. 15 may pay them off while simultaneously benefitting the Rice University community through a donation program.

Student Success Initiatives (SSI), the Rice Police Department (RUPD) and the Rice Parking Office invite the campus community to pay off unpaid parking fines with donations of food and hygiene products. All donations will go to The Pantry.

Donations will be collected both days from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Room 103, Mudd Computer Science Laboratory. Anyone who wants to pay off citations with donations should bring a photo ID and license plate number to access the account quickly. Food items will not be accepted if they are damaged, opened, missing a label or expired.

Drivers with outstanding tickets can bring a minimum of five nonperishable food items or regular-size hygiene products to settle one current unpaid citation up to $30. Anyone who has more than one outstanding citation may donate more items. Ten products will cover $60-$75 worth of fines, and 20 products will cover $150 worth of fines.

The Pantry, housed in the Rice Memorial Center, provides access to nonperishable foods and hygiene products. It is similar to a neighborhood food market except its food and products are free to its shoppers. The Pantry operates on a good-faith basis as an anonymous resource for all students, faculty, staff and community members.

Donations will not be valid for refunds on citations already paid.

Anyone who doesn’t have outstanding tickets is also welcome to donate.
