Rice Athletics and the Office of Academic Advising (OAAA) jointly hosted the 38th annual Scholar Athlete Celebration Feb. 25 at the R Room. The award winners were chosen based on character and accomplishment in school and in sport.
Rice President Reginald DesRoches, Provost Amy Dittmar, Dean of Undergraduates Bridget Gorman, Faculty Athletics Representative Leo Costello and Director of Athletics Tommy McClelland were in attendance for the evening. Director of Principles of Economics Program and Senior Lecturer James DeNicco delivered the keynote speech. Gabe Baker, a former Rice football player and Bob Quin Award winner, played the school’s alma mater, “Rice’s Honor,” to open the program.
Sponsored by the R Association, Rice University Scholar Athletes are selected from a pool of Honor Athletes (third-, fourth- and fifth-year student-athletes who maintain a 3.4 GPA) during the spring semester of every academic year. Each varsity team may honor up to three roster members with the title of Scholar Athlete and awardees are determined by the OAAA in conjunction with the athletics department coaching staff.
