United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby talks innovation, sustainability with President DesRoches

Rice University President Reginald DesRoches spoke with United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby Nov. 1 at The Ion as part of a new series called “Visionary Voices.” Jan Odegard, executive director at The Ion, and  Managing Director of United Airlines Ventures Andrew Chang, a Rice alumnus, opened the conversation by introducing the goals of their respective companies and commending Rice for creating The Ion.

“This is really an innovation hub,” Odegard said, “a catalyst for new businesses that will help accelerate and transform Houston into a technology destination where new innovation can happen.”

Kirby discussed the airline’s goals for sustainability and using artificial intelligence to aid consumers. He highlighted that United Airlines isn’t going for “net zero” but instead “100% green.” People tend to think of innovation as technology, but Kirby said he believes it is also about culture.

“It’s about change and making things better,” Kirby said. “We can make a difference that goes way beyond United Airlines.”
