Ten Rice students showcased an exhibition titled “HART in the World: Rome,” capturing their experiences on a study abroad trip to the Eternal City through photographs, sketches and research projects at Herring Hall on Nov. 14.

The study abroad program that began in May was led by Sophie Crawford-Brown, assistant professor of art history and director of the Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations Program, and Eilis Coughlin, a doctoral student.

The exhibition was fully organized, designed and installed by the student participants.

The program had been on hiatus since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with this being the first year since then that the program was able to happen.

“We were especially excited to be able to restart this,” Crawford-Brown said. “With this program to Rome, there was a lot of student interest, and we ended up with this wonderful group of 10 students who did a spring seminar here at Rice based on the city of Rome.”

Crawford-Brown said the exhibition was a combination of personalized and group research.

“We had such an amazing opportunity to go to Rome and study all of the art history of the city before we went,” said Ellie Mandelker, an undergraduate student and double major in art history. “I just think it’s really cool that everyone gets to experience it with us. I think it’s great for art history.”

“HART in the World: Rome” student participants included: Chloe Chan, Elizabeth Fessler, Ella Langridge, Nicole Lhuillier, Mandelker, Will Marsden, Emily Montanez, Kenzie Pickett, Jin Yan and Alayne Ziglin.
