Rice economist available to discuss Big Tech profit reports following layoffs

John Diamond

As Big Tech releases its latest round of profit reports, Rice University economist John Diamond is available to discuss the reports following major layoffs over the past several months and what the future holds.

Diamond, director of the Baker Institute for Public Policy’s Center for Public Finance, adjunct professor of economics at Rice and CEO of Tax Policy Advisers, LLC., is currently focused on the economic effects of corporate tax reform, the economic and distributional effects of fundamental tax reform, taxation and housing values, public sector pensions, and various other tax and expenditure policy issues.

“The technology sector has seen both massive layoffs and a surge in valuations in the first half of 2023,” Diamond said. “I expect to see continued earnings growth but slower increases in valuations in the second half of 2023. The market will be looking for companies with an ability to monetize artificial intelligence moving forward.”
