Melodie French, an assistant professor of Earth, environmental and planetary sciences, has won the 2022 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Mineral and Rock Physics Early Career Award. The annual award for those within 10 years of earning a Ph.D. “recognizes outstanding contributions by an early career scientist in the broadly defined area of mineral and rock physics,” according to the AGU, which noted the work may be experimental, computational, theoretical or a combination. French’s lab studies the mechanical properties of rock using high pressure and temperature experiments and field observations, with a particular interest in earthquake hazards. The award will be presented at the AGU’s fall meeting in Chicago Dec. 12-16.
