A multidisciplinary team led by Todd Treangen, an assistant professor of computer science, computer science graduate student Nick Sapoval and postdoctoral researcher Amirali Aghazadeh has published an open-access review paper in Nature Communications on the advances and limitations of deep learning as applied to the biosciences. The researchers outline challenges in four broad areas: structural and functional biology, bioengineering, systems biology and evolutionary biology.
