The Rice football team overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat the University of Alabama at Birmingham 28-24 on Saturday to open Conference USA play.

After trailing 17-7 at halftime at Rice Stadium, the Owls (3-2 overall, 1-0 C-USA) struck for two touchdowns in less than a minute to move in front. Ari Broussard's three-yard scoring run was followed by a four-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Treshawn Chamberlain.

UAB retook the lead with a TD late in the third quarter, but T.J. McMahon's six-yard scoring pass to Dean Connors with 9:02 left in the fourth provided the winning points thanks to some stout Rice defense in the final minutes.
