Investiture ceremony for Rice President DesRoches set for Oct. 22

University’s eighth president to officially take command in Academic Quadrangle celebration

HOUSTON -- (Oct. 18, 2022) -- Rice University will celebrate the historic inauguration of its eighth president, Reginald DesRoches , with a series of events from Thursday, Oct. 20, to Saturday, Oct. 22. The celebrations will culminate in DesRoches’ investiture Oct. 22.

DesRoches’ term as president of Rice officially began July 1, after having formerly served as the university’s Howard Hughes Provost and William and Stephanie Sick Dean of Engineering. As president, DesRoches is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing its academic and research mission.

Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, DesRoches is Rice’s first Black, immigrant and engineer president.

Investiture is one of the oldest traditions in academia; a milestone that celebrates a new era for the university while honoring its history. On Oct. 22, the Rice community, alongside members of the international academic community and citizens of the city of Houston, will join together to celebrate the official transfer of leadership.
