The hard work and civic-oriented contributions of Rice community members will be celebrated at the Center for Civic Leadership’s annual Spring Showcase April 12 at the Rice Memorial Center.

Under the theme of “Effective Collective,” this year’s showcase will consist of two connected events. First, students will have the opportunity to connect with Rice alumni and community partners working in civic-related, service-minded fields at the Civic Careers Coffee Reception in the Miner Lounge, where they’ll be able to discuss career paths and get valuable advice while enjoying light refreshments.

“The civic career fair event will help introduce students to community partners and alumni who work in service-related careers across the public, private and NGO (nongovernmental organization) sectors,” said Emily Weaver ’22, a CCL student ambassador. “Our hope is that students can see how their disciplinary skills can be applied in a professional context after graduation.”

Immediately following that reception, the action will move to Farnsworth Pavilion for the Gallery Walk, where both student leaders and Rice faculty will present on their experiences working with the CCL, share opportunities and resources the CCL makes available for Rice Owls to collaborate with the broader Houston community, and provide firsthand accounts of service projects they’ve participated in over the past several months.

This portion of the showcase will also include the annual student Service Awards — a collaborative effort between the CCL and the Rice Student Volunteer Program.

“The biannual showcases truly are the best opportunity to get to know our work, our students, our staff and faculty partners, and we love that it is an opportunity to chat with other community and campus partners about their work as well,” said Morgan Kinney, associate director of the CCL.

“This spring’s activities to be showcased include Rich Family Endowment projects, Houston Action Research Teams, Alternative Spring Breaks, the Capstone in Civic Leadership, America Reads and our inaugural cohort of the Engaged Scholar Collective, a group of faculty integrating community-based learning and research in and beyond their classrooms,” Kinney added.

The Center for Civic Leadership Spring Showcase will be held April 12 at the Rice Student Center. The Civic Careers Coffee Reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Miner Lounge, and the Gallery Walk and Service Awards presentations will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Farnsworth Pavilion.
