Rice, along with the rest of Houston, is approaching record-setting cold and a wintery mix of sleet and snow, with low temperatures dipping into the teens and a wind chill below zero degrees. The high temperature early this week is forecast to be 27 degrees, the coldest in years.
Across campus, classes are cancelled – both on campus and online – due to dangerous road conditions and rolling blackouts. Fondren Library, the Rice Student Center, and the Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center will all be closed Monday and Tuesday. Rice Shuttle services are also suspended through Feb. 16.
The coldest temperature ever recorded at George Bush Intercontinental Airport was 7 degrees Dec. 23, 1989. Forecasters say this week's winter storm may break that record.
