Following a morning commencement ceremony that combined advanced degree and doctoral candidates of the Classes of 2020 and 2021, freshly minted Ph.D.s headed to the Graduate Commons outside Valhalla for the traditional hoodings by their advisers.

Although this important gesture usually takes place on stage at the doctoral convocation, this year's informal outdoor gathering gave guests like Rachel Spring, whose son Ryan Spring received his Ph.D. in computer science in 2020, the chance to celebrate the graduates with toasts and speeches.
