The plan for creating Galveston Bay Park, a 10,000-acre public park on a chain of man-made islands that would protect Houston from a devastating hurricane, was selected for honorable mention in the urban design category of Fast Company's 2021 World Changing Ideas Awards. Galveston Bay Park was proposed by Rice's Severe Storm Prediction, Education and Evacuation from Disasters (SSPEED) Center in 2015 and the plan was conceived by Rice Architecture alumni Rob Rogers '81 and Tyler Swanson '04.
