Padley will assume his new role Sept. 1 upon the departure of Klara Jelinkova, who recently announced she will step down from her post to accept a position at Harvard University.

Padley has been deeply involved with information technology at Rice, serving on a number of faculty advisory committees on IT issues including the university’s IT executive committee. In an announcement to the Rice IT team, President David Leebron pointed out that Padley also leads the U.S. Compact Muon Solenoid detector operations at the European Organization for Nuclear Research's Large Hadron Collider.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in our Office of Information Technology for their incredible work over the past year and a half in sustaining our ability to deliver the services necessary to support our research, education and service missions,” Leebron wrote.

Padley holds a Ph.D. and master's degree in physics from the University of Toronto and a bachelor's in physics from York University.
