Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner declared Jan. 16 “Dr. Paula Sanders Day” in honor of her work as a scholar, teacher and director of Rice's Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance. Sanders also received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, in honor of “her distinguished academic career and strong commitment to the Houston community,” according to the certificate.

Both honors were presented during a kickoff event for Latin Week Houston, which is co-sponsored by the Boniuk Institute’s Arts of Tolerance program.
