Housing, ‘pliability’ topics of spring architecture events

Questions around housing and discussions of “pliability” are among the topics of this semester’s Rice Architecture Lecture Series, which includes a selection of evening lectures, symposia and noon talks as well as the Rice Design Alliance Spotlight Award + Lecture and Civic Forum.

Lois Weinthal, chair and professor of interior design at Ryerson University in Toronto, will give the first of two "Pliable Lectures" on “Wrinkles and Folds” on Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. at Anderson Hall’s Farish Gallery. The lectures support Rice Professor of Architecture Dawn Finley’s spring research seminar on shaping interiors through architectural textile constructions.

Feb. 19: Filipe Magalhães, Ana Luisa Soares and Ahmed Belkhodja, the founding principals of Fala Atelier in Porto, Portugal, will discuss their firm’s work in “Gloriously Repeating” at the Rice Design Alliance Spotlight Award + Lecture at 6 p.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Brown Auditorium.

Feb. 20-21: Compositional Physics and Other Forms of Disorder, an exhibition and symposium, will feature keynote speaker Zeynep Çelik Alexander, an associate professor of art history and archaeology at Columbia University, at 6 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Farish Gallery. The talk will follow the opening reception of the Watkin Seminar Student Exhibition at 5 p.m. The symposium will be held Feb. 21 at Farish Gallery, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Viola Ago, this year’s Wortham Fellow at Rice Architecture, is organizing the event.

Feb. 24: Frank Barkow, a partner at Barkow Leibinger, Berlin-New York, will give a talk titled “Toolbox” at 6 p.m. at Farish Gallery.

March 5-6: Disrupting Housing: New Paradigms in Mexican Collective Living, a panel discussion at Farish Gallery from 1-7 p.m. each day. Jesús Vassallo, Rice's Gus Wortham Assistant Professor of Architecture, is organizing the event.

March 9: Christopher Hight, an associate professor of architecture at Rice, on “Global Littorals” at noon at Farish Gallery.

March 11: Elizabeth Timme and Helen Leung, co-founders of LA-Màs, Los Angeles, deliver the Llewelyn-Davies Sahni Innovative Practice Lecture titled “I Heard You Build Benches” at 6 p.m. at Farish Gallery.

March 23: Jesús Vassallo on his book “Epics in the Everyday,” noon at Farish Gallery.

March 25: Matilda McQuaid, Deputy Director of Curatorial and Head of Textiles at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, gives the second Pliable Lecture, “Textile Intentions: Creating a Pliable World," at 6 p.m. at Farish Gallery.

March 27: Esra Akcan, an associate professor of architecture at Cornell University, gives a keynote lecture titled “Right to Heal” for the Rice Architecture Dissertation Colloquium: Solid Sea at 6:30 p.m. at Farish Gallery. The colloquium will be held March 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rice Associate Professor of Architecture Reto Geiser is organizing the program.

March 30: Wonne Ickx, the Cullinan Visiting Professor at Rice and founding principal of Productora, Mexico City, on “Pyramid Schemes” at 6 p.m. at Farish Gallery.

April 29: Rice Design Alliance Civic Forum 2020, “A House of One’s Own -- A State of Houston Housing,” at 6 p.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Brown Auditorium.
