Lessons in lifesaving from Rice EMS

Rice EMS

In the foreground, Rice Emergency Medical Services (REMS) member and Brown College junior Ben Huang instructs Carlyn Chatfield, manager of IT communications, on how to perform CPR chest compressions; in the background, REMS member and Baker College senior Owais Syed teaches Jane Puthaaroon, instructional technology specialist, proper CPR hand positions. The lessons were part of training sessions offered by REMS in how to conduct “hands-only” CPR, a potentially lifesaving technique involving no mouth-to-mouth contact. The sessions also covered how to use the automated external defibrillators — or AEDs — that are now available at 41 locations across campus. A map of all the public-access defibrillator locations is available on the REMS website at http://rems.rice.edu/pad-sites/. (Photo by Jeff Fitlow)
