Order your summer veggies now during Rice’s spring plant sale

Tomatoes, eggplants and peppers all thrive in Houston’s hot, humid weather. And during Rice’s upcoming spring plant sale, you can purchase varietals of these vegetables that are especially suited to growing at home.

Proceeds from the annual plant sale benefit the Rice Holistic Garden, where the plants will be available for pickup after ordering online.

For sale this spring are five varieties of eggplant, three kinds of peppers and seven types of tomato — including juicy heirloom tomatoes in an abundance of colors.

Prices are between $2 and $4, with eggplants and peppers sold in 4-inch pots and tomatoes in quart-sized pots.

The deadline to order plants is midnight on Feb. 23. Plants can be picked up at the Rice Holistic Garden, near Entrance 6, during the following times: Feb. 26 from 4 to 6 p.m.; Feb. 28 from 5 to 6; March 1 from noon to 2; and March 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

And when you pick up those plants, you’ll be able to purchase some crops from the last of the cool season harvest, including Asian greens, lettuce and bok choy. Though payments for the spring plant sale varietals may be made by credit card online, you’ll need to bring cash or a check to pick up any greens while you’re there.
