Culberson addresses materials scientists at Rice

U.S. Rep. John CulbersonU.S. Rep. John Culberson, R-Texas, was a featured speaker at the Transcending Incrementalism – Advanced Materials Symposium 2018 hosted by Rice University June 27-29 and sponsored by the Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering. The symposium addressed questions about how research and organizations need to change to accelerate advances in materials science.

Culberson, head of the House Committee on Appropriations’ Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, spoke about his efforts to maintain NASA and National Science Foundation funding with as little politicization as possible. He told the audience at the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies’ Anderson-Clarke Center that America must remain a world leader in space and science, and said he encourages greater funding for NASA to facilitate a “civilization-level” discovery, such as evidence of primitive life off of Earth.
