Candidates for the District V trustee position for the Houston Independent School District convened at Rice Oct. 18 for a forum organized by Melissa Marschall, a professor of political science and director of the Kinder Institute’s Center for Local Elections in American Politics; Shelby Joe, president of General Academic (a tutoring and test-prep consulting company in Rice Village); and Rice student organizations Civic Duty Rice and Pi Sigma Alpha (Rice’s political science honorary society).
The event provided Rice faculty, staff, students and members of the Houston community with the opportunity to learn about issues facing the school board. Six of the board’s nine seats are up for election Nov. 7. (Photos by Melissa Marschall.)
