Food, school supplies wanted for needy

Throughout July, Rice University will participate in a food drive and school supply drive to support the Houston Food Bank and Houston Area Women’s Center, respectively.

The Houston Food Bank is accepting donations until July 10, and needs canned meats, vegetables and fruits, as well as dried pastas, rice and beans. Or, take part in a “virtual food drive” by donating money online at www.houstonfoodbank.org. You may also mail a check (payable to “Houston Food Bank”) to the Community Involvement Center at MS-200. Learn more at www.houstonfoodbank.org.

From July 9 to July 24, the Houston Area Women’s Center will collect all forms of elementary school supplies, including glue, scissors, colors, pencils, paper and notebooks.  Find more details at http://www.hawc.org.

You may also make a monetary donation. Although any donation amount is appreciated, $50 will buy a backpack fully stocked with all the items necessary for one child. Mail a check, payable to Houston Area Women’s Center, to the Community Involvement Center at MS-200. Call Pam Hobbs at 713-528-5793 x-2255 or e-mail phobbs@hawc.org with questions.

To donate, drop food items in the Red Barrels and school supplies in receptacles located at the following campus locations: the Allen Center for Business Activities, Seeley G. Mudd Computer Science Laboratory, Rice Memorial Center or the Autry Court and Gymnasium.
