A groundbreaking study led by Rice chemical and biomolecular engineer Walter Chapman is listed as one of the “All-Time Greats and Contemporary Favorites” among papers published by the American Chemical Society journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research. The journal, founded under a different name in 1909, published in August an online issue of its most-cited papers. The Chapman paper, “New Reference Equation of State for Associating Liquids,” established a first-order model called SAFT to calculate the effect of molecular size, shape and association on the phase behavior and properties of fluid mixtures, critical information in chemical and polymer process design and in oil and gas production. The paper is No. 7 on the top 15 all-time highest-cited list. Chapman said two other papers on the list are variations on his work. He is the William W. Akers Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and associate dean of engineering for energy research.
