President Nixon’s role in American space program to be discussed at Rice’s Baker Institute April 27

HOUSTON – (April 21, 2015) – John Logsdon, former director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, will discuss his new book, “After Apollo? Richard Nixon and the American Space Program,” at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy April 27. In his book, Logsdon traces in detail how Nixon changed the course of U.S. space policy.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Who: John Logsdon, former director of the Space Policy Program at George Washington University.

George Abbey, senior fellow in Space Policy at the Baker Institute, will give introductory remarks.

What: A presentation titled “After Apollo? Richard Nixon and the American Space Program.”

When: 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, April 27.

Where: Rice University, James A. Baker III Hall, Kelly International Conference Facility, 6100 Main St.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong took “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” The success of the Apollo 11 mission satisfied the goal that had been set by President John F. Kennedy just over eight years earlier. It also raised the question “What do you do next, after landing on the moon?” It fell to Nixon to answer this question. “After Apollo? Richard Nixon and the American Space Program” traces in detail how Nixon and his associates went about developing their response.

A book signing will follow the presentation. Logsdon’s book will be provided for sale by Rice University Bookstore.

The public must register to attend this event at http://bakerinstitute.org/events/register/1714/?submit=RSVP.
