Rice alumna Annise Parker ’78 is ranked No. 7 on the 2014 list of the world’s top 10 mayors by the City Mayors Foundation. The foundation is an international organization dedicated to promoting good, open and honest local government. It awards the World Mayor Prize every two years to honor mayors globally who have made outstanding contributions to their community and have developed a vision for urban living and working relevant to towns and cities across the world.

Parker became mayor of Houston in 2010 and has been re-elected twice. The City Mayors Foundation noted that her achievements include improving the city’s finances and investing in public area improvements, such as increasing the number and quality of parks and other green spaces.
