Hardt named fellow of the American Mathematical Society

Rice University mathematician Robert Hardt has been named a fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) for 2015.

Hardt, the W.L. Moody Professor of Mathematics, was elected for “contributions to calculus of variations, partial differential equations and analytic approaches to geometry and topology, as well as mentoring.”

Hardt, who joined Rice’s faculty in 1988, was among 63 mathematicians selected for the 2015 class of AMS fellows.

The designation as an AMS fellow recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication and use of mathematics. Fewer than 5 percent of the society’s 30,000 members have been chosen fellows, and Hardt becomes the 10th member of Rice’s Department of Mathematics selected for the honor.

Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the AMS fulfills its mission through programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses, strengthen mathematical education and foster awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life.
