Unconventional irrigation

The speed bump in front of Lovett Hall was installed by Facilities, Engineering and Planning to protect a hose that is transporting water from a pump in the basement of Sewall Hall to the lawn in Founder’s Court. Because the first two floors in Sewall are at basement level, the water in the surrounding ground needs to be removed routinely to prevent flooding. Using the water pumped from the basement level to irrigate Founder’s Court saves the university money and is an environmentally friendly way to keep the grass green. The speed bump is expected to remain in place all summer, due to the drought. (Photo by Jeff Fitlow)
