Rec Center named an outstanding sports facility
The Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center recently won a National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Outstanding Sports Facility Award. The annual awards are presented for creative, innovative designs of new, renovated or expanded collegiate recreational facilities. Each winner is considered a standard or model by which other collegiate recreational facilities should be measured and from which others can benefit. Judges evaluate each facility for its architectural design, functionality and how well it meets its intended purpose. The Gibbs Recreation Center opened in September 2009 and houses state-of-the-art weight and cardio equipment, two gyms, a multipurpose athletic court, a recreational and a competitive swimming pool, outdoor basketball courts and an outdoor adventure center. The 103,000-square-foot facility has allowed for the growth and prosperity of outstanding recreational programs and has become a central hub of the Rice campus. |
