Mary Temple’s ‘Northwest Corner, Southeast Light’ installation opens at Rice Gallery Feb. 3

FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS

Rice University Art Gallery’s new exhibition, “Northwest Corner, Southeast Light,” will open Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. The artist, Mary Temple, will discuss the installation at 6 p.m.

Mary Temple’s “Southwest Corner and 3 Pillars, North Light” spans 70 feet at University Museum at Albany, New York.

Temple will also present a gallery talk the following day at noon. A complimentary light lunch will be offered to all who attend.

“Northwest Corner, Southeast Light” is the largest of Temple’s ongoing light installation series. The title is a reference to how she imagines a large swath of sunlight might appear in the northwest corner of the Rice Gallery space. Even on sunless, overcast days, visitors to the contemplative space will be reminded of certain moments and qualities of light.

Temple received a BFA and an MFA from Arizona State University, Tempe. She has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Arts and Design, N.Y.; the Brooklyn Museum; Smack Mellon in Brooklyn; and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Conn. Temple lives and works in Brooklyn.

The installation will be on exhibit through May 25. For more on “Northwest Corner, Southeast Light,” go to www.ricegallery.org/new/exhibition/northwestcorner.html.
