People, Papers, Presentations

Elaine Howard Ecklund delivered a keynote lecture about religion among scientists for the American Association for the Advancement of Science Dialogue on Science, Ethics and Religion Dec. 15 in Washington, D.C. Her talk was based on her recent comprehensive study on the religious beliefs and views of nearly 1,700 natural and social scientists, which is featured in her book “Science vs. Religion: What Scientists Really Think.” Also as part of the program, Barbara Bradley Hagerty, religion correspondent for NPR, discussed Ecklund’s research in light of the media’s coverage of science and religion and Bradley’s own experiences in engaging with the public.

Ewa Thompson, research professor in German studies, was invited to write the lead article for the first issue of a new academic quarterly, The Other Shore: Slavic and East European Culture Abroad, Past and Present, and published by Charles Schlacks Jr. Publishers. Her article, “Whose Discourse? Telling the Story in Postcommunist Poland,” appeared in the fall 2010 issue of the journal.
