Science and socializing

Middle school girls from across the city were at Rice Oct. 24 for a day of science and socializing at the Sally Ride Science Festival. Students, parents and teachers participated in discovery workshops led by scientists and engineers, heard a talk by astronaut Ellen Ochoa and enjoyed hands-on activities, food and music. The festival, which is held annually at universities across the country, is designed to encourage fifth- through eighth-grade girls to consider careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). The festival was co-sponsored by the Rice Space Institute, the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and the George R. Brown School of Engineering. |
