Sneak a peek at Duncan and McMurtry colleges Sept. 8
University community welcome to tour new north colleges

McMurtry College, like Duncan, features energy-efficient technologies and a green roof, which holds soil, reduces stormwater runoff and protects plant life.

The Rice University community is invited to take a sneak peek at the new Duncan and McMurtry colleges from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 8. No formal tours will be given, but faculty, staff and students can meet in the plaza between the two colleges, get a snow cone and pick up maps to explore the buildings on their own. Snacks and light refreshments will be served in each of the commons and in the new servery.

Both of the new north colleges feature energy-efficient technologies and green roofs, which hold soil, reduce stormwater runoff and protect plant life. Both colleges are being built to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Duncan College is named after former U.S. Secretary of Energy Charles Duncan ’47 and his wife, Anne; McMurty College is named for Burton ’56 and Deedee McMurtry ’56.

Though students have moved into the completed portions of the new colleges, construction in other areas remains ongoing. Each college will be formally dedicated in the fall of 2010.
