Got unneeded binders cluttering up a storage cabinet? A gross of paper clips that will never get used? Bring them to Rice Memorial Center’s Grand Hall May 21 for Rice’s first “free”-cycling of office items.

Between 10 and 11 a.m., departments can drop off excess or unused office supplies. Tables will be set up and marked by categories. Then between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., those items that were one department’s surplus can become another’s provisions — for free. Items not picked up by the end of the event will be donated to a charitable organization.

Among items departments might swap are appointment books, binders, business card holders, calculators, clipboards, coffee pots, cups, dividers, organizers, easels, easel pads, envelopes, expanding files, Federal Express shipping supplies, file folders, hanging folders, highlighters, index cards, index dividers, index guides, interoffice envelopes, labels, notepads, paper clips, pens, pencils, rubber bands, sheet protectors, staplers and unused batteries.

Recycling bins also will be available for dead batteries, dead cell phones, empty toner/ink cartridges, bubble wrap, packing peanuts and electronics.

Any item that can be listed on the Rice Classifieds should not be brought to the free-cycling event.

If a department needs help delivering items to Grand Hall, contact Delivery Services at rrojas@rice.edu for early pickup May 20.

For information about helping with the event, contact Ute Franklin, Delivery Services manager, at umf@rice.edu.

The free-cycling event is sponsored by Delivery Services and the offices of Sustainability, Environmental Health and Safety, Procurement and the Vice President for Administration.
