Martel College junior Sarita Panchang and other students from the BIOS 336 Plant Diversity class planted about 20 pounds of native grass and wildflower seeds last Friday near the South Plant, which currently is under construction.

Facilities, Engineering and Planning, through the South Plant project, donated about $2,500 worth of seed, a blend of more than 40 individual plant species, as part of the restoration of the Harris Gully Natural Area following the construction in that area.

Blooming from these efforts should be not only flowers and grasses, but also educational opportunities for future students of plant diversity classes, said Ken Whitney, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. The students will be able to use the flora to learn plant identification.

Plans are to sow another 58 pounds of seeds in the fall.
