Water-permeable concrete tested in North Lot Annex

Water-permeable concrete tested in North Lot Annex

JEFF FITLOW
The new North Lot Annex opened last week, sporting Rice University’s first patch of water-permeable concrete to be used in a parking area. The patch is located near live oak trees to provide water and air to the trees’ roots as well as to be tested for use in parking spaces and more heavily trafficked right-of-ways.

The North Lot Annex also is the first parking lot on campus to incorporate planting boxes that hold trees and grasses. It’s part of a larger effort to improve drainage and find cost-effective methods of handling water run-off. Other efforts include replacing unused hardscape with grass and other plants.
