Rice hopes for national recognition for recycling

Rice University is participating in nationwide college and university recycling competitions called “RecycleMania.” Rice is competing with 93 schools in 33 states to collect the largest amount of recyclables per person.

With the contest running through April 8, Rice is recycling paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, glass containers and plastic bottles.

As the only school from Texas participating in this competition, Rice is already able to claim bragging rights as the state champion — but for the university to achieve national acclaim for recycling, everyone on campus must pitch in by using recycling containers daily.

“[The people in my department] are excited about our efforts to increase recycling,” said Eusebio Franco, director of the custodial and grounds department in Facilities, Engineering and Planning. “We call our recycling program ‘Operation No Waste.’”

The Rice Recycling Program has partnered with the Student Recycling Council to use this competition to improve recycling efforts at Rice.

To request a recycling bin, call Rice’s recycling coordinator, Mike Polk, at 713-348-5272 or contact a custodian.
