Who: Jesús Reyes-Heroles, a nonresident fellow for the Baker Institute Center for the United States and Mexico and the executive president of StructurA. He was CEO of Pemex from 2006 to 2009 and served as ambassador of Mexico to the United States from 1997 to 2000.

What: A presentation titled “The Challenges Ahead for Mexico’s Energy Policy.”

When: Friday, Sept. 13, 9:30-11 a.m. Breakfast will be served at 9.

Where: Rice University, James A. Baker III Hall, Doré Commons, 6100 Main St.

During the administration of Mexico’s last president, Enrique Peña Nieto, the country enacted sweeping energy reforms that opened its oil and gas sector to private investment for the first time in decades. As a result, oil companies from around the world signed deals to invest billions of dollars into Mexico’s energy sector. But Peña Nieto’s successor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has halted the reforms, prompting doubts about his commitment to the agreements with foreign investors, according to event organizers. At the same time, Mexico’s oil production is declining, and its reliance on gas imports from the U.S. continues to grow.

A live webcast will be available at the event page, www.bakerinstitute.org/events/2019.
