It was standing room only in Brazos Bookstore Sept. 6 as Rice history professor Caleb McDaniel read from his new book, “Sweet Taste of Liberty: A True Story of Slavery and Restitution in America.” In fitting professorial fashion, McDaniel brought handouts for the crowd to follow along as he told the story of Henrietta Wood, who survived enslavement twice and, 30 years after she was first freed, won the largest known financial settlement awarded by a U.S. court in restitution for slavery. The event kicked off a 14-city book tour. (Photo by Katharine Shilcutt)
