More than 200 attended the Texas Biomaterials Day symposium May 31 at Rice’s BioScience Research Collaborative. The event, organized at Rice by Jordan Miller, an assistant professor of bioengineering, and Omid Veiseh, an assistant professor of bioengineering, showcased innovations from industry leaders and student researchers.

Rice chemistry graduate student Tania Lopez Silvawon the poster presentation competition and Texas A&M University biomedical engineering graduate student Shangjing Xintook the prize for best rapid-fire talk. In addition to a certificate and monetary award, Miller, whose recent breakthrough in 3D bioprinting has received national attention, surprised the winners with 3D printed models of the organ he and his colleagues created.

Texas Biomaterials Day was created by the Society for Biomaterials and is held annually in six regions throughout the United States. The Department of Bioengineering, Volumetric and the Society for Biomaterials supported the Rice event. Read more at https://bioengineering.rice.edu/biomaterialsday2019.
