Unconventional Students at Rice 2019: Jason Lopez gained confidence, professional skills

Jason Lopez was a very different person when he entered Rice as a freshman.

Lopez and his siblings were raised by their mother, who emigrated from El Salvador and worked at a car wash to provide for her family. “Overall, I’ve had a great time at Rice University,” he said. “I’m excited to be here and I’m excited for the opportunities I received while I was here.”

A chemical engineering major, Lopez joined a variety of organizations to hone his leadership and communication skills, such as the Rice Center for Engineering Leadership, the Doerr Institute for New Leaders and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. “It’s a difficult major, but there are so many resources on campus that helped me succeed,” he said. “Coming from my background made it difficult at certain points and there were times where I struggled, but here I am, a senior at one of the most prestigious schools in the world, and I’ve made it.”

After graduation, Lopez will work for Ernst & Young as a consultant. “It’s a really nice feeling knowing I’ll actually be able to achieve my goals, help my family out and help them see a better future.”
