University Representative Y. Ping Sun is among 37 people appointed to serve on the Mayor’s Commission Against Gun Violence. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner charged the commission to develop and propose specific recommendations to improve gun safety in schools, neighborhoods and communities through action on the local, state and federal levels. The commission includes students, parents, physicians, law enforcement officials, gun-rights advocates, victims of gun violence and members of faith-based and civil rights organizations.

Daniel Hughes, an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology, is co-author of a paper published this month in the British Medical Journal that finds preliminary evidence that physical activity benefits patients with prostate cancer. The study is based on a phase 3 trial designed to determine if high-intensity aerobic and resistance exercise would increase overall survival in patients with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer.
