March events at Rice U.’s Shepherd School of Music

HOUSTON – (March 2, 2018) – Events at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in March include the spring opera production of Mozart’s “La finta giardiniera,” faculty recitals, Sharing the Spotlight series, the Shepherd School concerto competitions and more.

All performances are open to the public and held in Alice Pratt Brown Hall on the Rice campus, 6100 Main St. Unless otherwise noted, events are free. Check the Shepherd School website for updated information on events and possible cancellations at music.rice.edu.

Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra
Larry Rachleff, music director.
Program: Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1, “Jeremiah” (Susan Lorette Dunn, soprano); Anthony Brandt’s “Making Perfect” (premiere); Barber’s Violin Concerto, Op. 14 (Jacqueline Audas, soloist; Joshua Hong, conductor) and Copland’s Suite from “Appalachian Spring.”
Where: Stude Concert Hall.
When: March 3 at 8 p.m.

Shepherd School Opera and the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra
Mozart’s “La finta giardiniera,” with guest Music Director David Effron and Stage Director Debra Dickinson.
Where: Wortham Opera Theater at the Shepherd School.
When: March 5, 7 and 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets: $12 for general admission; $10 for students and senior citizens. Call 713-348-8000 for tickets.

First Mondays at the Shepherd School
Noontime series featuring Shepherd School students in recital on the first Monday of each month.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: March 5 at noon.

Hear&Now
Featuring works by Ligeti, Adés and Zappa. The program will be led by associate conductor Jerry Hou.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: March 6 at 8 p.m.

Chamber Music Master Class
Master class given by Shepherd School faculty members Kenneth Goldsmith and James Dunham.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: March 7 at noon.

Faculty Recital “Celebrating 30 Years as Colleagues”
Kathleen Winkler, violin; James Dunham, viola; Norman Fischer, cello; Jeanne Kierman, piano.
Program: Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 97 “Archduke Trio” and Brahms’ Piano Quintet No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 60.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: March 8 at 8 p.m.

Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra: Student Composers Concert
Program: Daria Tennikova-Satral’s “Three Scenes for Symphony Orchestra,” Joshua Hong, conductor; Clare Glackin’s “Archaea,” Ben Manis, conductor.
Where: Stude Concert Hall.
When: March 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Starling-Shepherd Distinguished Teacher Series Master Class
Ida Kavafian, professor of violin at the Curtis Institute of Music, will present two master classes with Shepherd School students as part of the 2017-2018 Starling-Shepherd Distinguished Teacher Series.
Where: Stude Concert Hall.
When: March 24 at 6 p.m. and March 25 at 10 a.m.

Shepherd School Contemporary Ensemble
Jerry Hou, associate conductor.
Program: Carter’s “Mosaic,” featuring Paula Page, harp; Kernis’ “Invisible Mosaic II”; and Adams’ “Gnarly Buttons,” featuring Richie Hawley, clarinet.
Where: Stude Concert Hall.
When: March 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Sharing the Spotlight series
Featuring Shepherd School faculty member Kathleen Winkler on violin and Shepherd School students.
Program: Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major, D.956, Op. post. 163; Mozart’s String Quartet No. 21 in D Major, K.575 and Brahms’ String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 51 No. 2.

Hear&Now
Featuring works by Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Luther Adams and John Adams.

Guest Artist Recital: Boaz Sharon
Boaz Sharon, professor of piano at Boston University, will perform Schumann’s “Kinderszenen,” Prokofiev’s “Roméo et Juliette,” Wagner’s “Das Ring von den Nibelungen” and Ravel’s “Miroirs.”

When: March 28 at 8 p.m.

Guest Artist Mast Class
Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet presents a master class with Shepherd School students.
Where: Stude Concert Hall
When: March 30 at 11 a.m.

Haydn Quartet Seminar Performance
Students of the Shepherd School will perform Haydn’s “The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross.”
Where: Duncan Recital Hall.
When: March 30 at 8 p.m.

Shepherd School Concerto Competition: Finals for Winds, Brass, Harp and Percussion
Where: Stude Concert Hall.
When: March 31 at 10 a.m.

Guest Artist Mast Class
Marianne Gedigian, Butler professor of flute and University distinguished teaching professor at The University of Texas, Austin.

When: March 31 at 1:30 p.m.

Shepherd School Concerto Competition: Finals for Strings
