 Israel-Palestine expert Djerejian available to discuss Abbas’ UN speech  

HOUSTON – (Feb. 20, 2018) – In an address to the United Nations Security Council today, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on world leaders to convene an international conference by mid-2018 that would result in the recognition of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.

Ambassador Edward Djerejian, director of Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, is available to discuss this development with the news media. He is a former U.S. ambassador to Syria and to Israel and a former assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs.

Djerejian’s career in the U.S. foreign service spanned the administrations of eight presidents from John F. Kennedy to Bill Clinton. Djerejian is a leading expert on national security, foreign policy and the complex political, security, economic, religious and ethnic issues of the Middle East and South Asia. He has played key roles in the Arab-Israeli peace process and regional conflict resolution. He is the author of “Danger and Opportunity: An American Ambassador’s Journey Through the Middle East.”
