Provost Marie Lynn Miranda made the announcement Nov. 15 in an email to the Rice community in which she cited Hutchinson’s “seven years of outstanding leadership and service.”

“John has been the best of colleagues in his role as dean,” Miranda said. “He has advanced our university in so many ways, all the while bringing thoughtfulness and compassion to his important work. During Harvey, he was absolutely pitch-perfect – a view repeated to me by faculty, staff, students and parents. I am deeply grateful for his countless contributions to our community.”

Seiichi Matsuda, dean of graduate and postdoctoral studies, will chair the search committee for the next dean of undergraduates.

“We expect to name the new dean in spring 2018,” Miranda said.
