Rice celebrates International Education Week Nov. 13-18

Rice is celebrating International Education Week (IEW), a joint initiative by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education acknowledging the benefits of international education exchange worldwide. A number of activities are scheduled for Nov. 13-18, ranging from open panel discussions and trainings to games and meals.

Highlights for the week include:

International Experience and Career Trajectories panel
Nov. 13, 5:30 p.m., Humanities Building, Room 119
This panel discussion, hosted by the Center for Civic Leadership, highlights the CCL’s Loewenstern Fellowship in International Service. The fellowship provides a yearlong experience for students to conduct service and civic research abroad. The 2017 cohort of Loewenstern Fellows will reflect on their experiences. Panelists from a range of careers, including in government, international nongovernmental organizations, international development and education, and public health, will discuss how international experience shaped and enabled their career paths.

Learning How To Pronounce Chinese Names
Nov. 14, 4 p.m., Lovett Hall, Entrance B conference room behind the Welcome Center
The Rice Chinese Students and Scholars Association and Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) will host this quick overview of how to correctly pronounce Chinese names. This event is geared toward administrative staff and faculty, but is open to anyone.

International Bingo
Nov. 15, 7 p.m., Miner Lounge, Rice Memorial Center
Rice Study Abroad will host International Bingo. Prizes and snacks will be provided, and study-abroad alumni will be present to share their experiences.

As a highlight for this year, Rice’s OISS invites the Rice community to submit a favorite cultural book to a list of international recommended reading (http://oiss.rice.edu/recommendedreading/).

Any office or group at Rice is welcome to participate in International Education Week by adding an event of their own as well as encouraging participation in the activities throughout the week.
