Rice Opera Department and Chamber Orchestra to present ‘Little Women’

The Opera Department and Chamber Orchestra of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music will present Mark Adamo’s “Little Women” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 and 3 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at Rice’s Wortham Opera Theatre in Alice Pratt Brown Hall on the Rice campus.

Little Women artwork.Adamo’s first opera, “Little Women” was premiered by Houston Grand Opera in 1998 and was an immediate success. The story is based on Louisa May Alcott’s novel about four sisters growing up in New England after the Civil War. Jo, the second of four sisters who loves her family life and doesn’t want anything to change, comes to realize that life progresses with its joys, conflicts, tragedies and resolutions.

The production will be conducted by David Effron, guest music director for Rice’s 2017-2018 opera productions, and staged by Peter Webster, stage director. Webster also served as stage director for the HGO’s world premiere of “Little Women.” The opera will be sung in English with English surtitles.

Tickets are $12 for the general public and $10 for students and senior citizens. For tickets, call the Shepherd School Concert Office at 713-348-8000.
